How the upgrader works

An upgrader is a bet on trading up. You pick an item or an amount of balance you hold, then pick a more expensive item from the site’s inventory. The site shows a win chance based on the value ratio, you roll, and you either take the target item or lose your stake. On TF2 sites the target might be an unusual hat or a stack of keys.

Some upgraders let you choose a multiplier instead of an item, so you can chase 2x at close to a coin flip or 100x at long odds. The maths is the same either way.

Odds and house edge

The fair chance is your stake divided by the target value. Stake 10 keys against a 50-key item and the fair chance is 20%. The site shows a smaller number, and the difference between the fair chance and the shown chance is the house edge. Because the edge applies on every roll, chained upgrades, where you feed one win into the next, pay the edge at each step and lose value faster than a single roll.

A provably fair upgrader commits to a hashed server seed before you roll and reveals it after, so you can recompute the outcome. Verify one roll before you stake an item you care about.

What to check before you upgrade

Compare the shown chance to the raw value ratio on a couple of targets to see the edge. Check that the target items are in the withdrawal inventory and not only pictured. Read how the site prices your deposited items, since a low deposit valuation costs you before you roll.
